Rwanda gorilla trekking: the complete guide

Rwanda gorilla trekking is the shortest route to a mountain gorilla family. In Volcanoes National Park you hike through bamboo and volcano slopes, then spend one hour with a habituated group. This guide explains how a trek works, how permits are booked, when to go and what else to do nearby.

Rwanda gorilla trekking at a glance

Rwanda gorilla trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park, in the north-west of the country. You walk into bamboo forest and volcano slopes with a ranger guide, then spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. Of all the places to see mountain gorillas, Rwanda offers the shortest journey from an international airport.

The facts below come from the Rwanda Development Board booking portal and from conservation sources. We last checked them on 18 October 2026.

Why choose Rwanda gorilla trekking

The shortest road to the gorillas

Rwanda gorilla trekking suits travellers with limited time. You can land in Kigali, drive to Musanze, trek the next morning and fly home the following day. As a result, it fits a two- or three-day trip.

A tidy, well-run system

The park runs on a clear routine. Visitors check in at the same hour, attend a briefing and then join a family. Roads to the park are smooth, and lodges cluster close to the park offices.

Easy to combine with more

Volcanoes National Park also offers golden monkey tracking, volcano hikes and the Dian Fossey trail. Nyungwe Forest and Lake Kivu lie within a day's drive of one another. Therefore Rwanda gorilla trekking works well inside a longer journey.

Volcanoes National Park and the Virunga gorillas

Volcanoes National Park lies in the Virunga Mountains. This chain of volcanoes straddles Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its slopes hold bamboo, mist and the highest peak in Rwanda, Mount Karisimbi, at 4,507 metres.

The Virunga massif shelters about half of the world's mountain gorillas. According to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the 2015 to 2016 census counted 604 gorillas there. Conservation body IUCN lists the subspecies as Endangered. Learn more on our Volcanoes National Park guide and our mountain gorillas page.

Gorilla families of Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda gorilla trekking visits habituated families. Each family has a dominant silverback, females and young gorillas, and each family has its own character. Around a dozen families are open to visitors, although the exact number changes over time.

The best-known families include Susa, Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, Kwitonda, Umubano and Hirwa. Families grow, split and move, so the line-up changes from year to year. Rangers assign you to a family on the morning of the trek, and they consider your fitness and any preference you share.

Tell your guide honestly how you walk. A slower group can then meet a nearer family, while a fit group may ask for a longer trek. Our guide to gorilla families explains how groups are formed.

A Rwanda gorilla trekking day, step by step

  1. Early check-in. Report to the Kinigi park offices at 07:00, according to the Rwanda Development Board.
  2. Briefing and groups. Rangers explain the rules and assign you to a family.
  3. Drive to the trailhead. A short ride takes you to the start for your family.
  4. The walk. You cross farmland, then climb into forest. Trackers radio the family's position.
  5. Meeting the gorillas. The guide stops you at the family. Keep a distance of 7 metres.
  6. Your hour. You watch, listen and photograph without flash.
  7. The return. You walk back, share your story with the group and head to your lodge.

Treks take anywhere from about one hour to most of a day, depending on where the family slept. See the official Rwanda Development Board page for the current routine. Many visitors finish by early afternoon.

Fitness and altitude in Rwanda

Rwanda gorilla trekking is a hike on steep, often muddy ground at altitude. The park lies between roughly 2,400 and 4,500 metres, so the air is thinner than at Bwindi. However, you do not need to be an athlete. A steady walking pace and good boots are enough for most visitors.

Easier and harder treks

Some families live close to the park boundary, while others roam higher on the slopes. As a result, walk times vary widely. The guides try to match groups to families by fitness, so be honest at the briefing.

Porters and help on the trail

Porters are available at a small charge, according to the Rwanda Development Board. They carry your daypack and help on slippery sections. Hiring one also supports a local family. Our guide to how difficult gorilla tracking is adds a fitness check and training ideas.

How permits work in Rwanda

Every visitor needs a permit for a specific date. The Rwanda Development Board issues them through its portal. Bookings follow a first come, first served rule, and you can book in advance. Our full guide to gorilla permit booking covers both countries.

How we book your permit

  1. Send your dates. Share two or three options and your group size.
  2. Share passport names. The portal needs full details at the time of booking.
  3. We reserve your permit. Our office handles the booking and confirms in writing.
  4. Book flights last. Buy flights only once your permit date is confirmed.

Refunds as the park describes them

The park states that late arrivals and flight delays receive no refund. If the group's movement makes an all-day trek impossible, you may get another chance or a full refund. If you track all day and never reach a family, the park refunds 75 per cent of the tracking fee. Terms for changes and transfers can differ, so ask us for the current rules in writing.

Seasons for Rwanda gorilla trekking

Rwanda gorilla trekking runs all year. The seasons change the trail conditions rather than the encounter.

MonthsSeasonWhat to expect
June to SeptemberDriestFirmer trails and clearer views. The busiest window.
October to NovemberWetRain returns. Forests are lush and quieter.
December to FebruaryDrierShort dry spells and good trekking weather.
March to MayWettestHeavy showers and slippery trails. Pack strong waterproofs.

Because the best months fill first, ask us for your dates early. Our best time to go guide compares months in detail, and the pattern is similar across the region.

Getting to Volcanoes National Park from Kigali

The park sits near the town of Musanze. The drive from Kigali covers about 90 to 95 kilometres. It takes roughly one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on traffic and your starting point.

Most visitors arrive in Kigali, sleep once and drive up in the morning, or drive up the day before the trek. We recommend sleeping near the park the night before, because the 07:00 check-in is early. Our 2-day Rwanda gorilla trek shows how short the journey can be.

Lodges around Musanze range from simple guesthouses to luxury camps. Each sits within a short drive of the Kinigi park offices. Tell us your comfort level and we will suggest the right fit.

Beyond gorillas: more to do around Volcanoes National Park

Where to stay for Rwanda gorilla trekking

Most visitors sleep in or near Musanze, the town closest to the park offices. A night close by avoids a very early drive on trek day. Lodges range from simple guesthouses to luxury camps with volcano views.

Choosing a lodge

Pick a lodge that matches your comfort level, your budget and your arrival time. Some lodges are a few minutes from the Kinigi offices, while others sit further along the ridge. We recommend lodges that keep the 07:00 start easy.

After the trek

Many visitors take a rest day, a village walk or a visit to the golden monkeys after the gorillas. Tell us how active you want to be, and we will shape the days around you. See our luxury gorilla safaris for the top end of comfort.

Rules and etiquette on a Rwanda gorilla trek

The rules protect the gorillas, and they protect you. Your guide will repeat them at the briefing.

  • Keep to eight visitors per family and one hour at the gorillas.
  • Keep a distance of 7 metres, the official Rwanda figure. If gorillas approach, stay calm and follow your guide.
  • Do not trek if you are ill. Gorillas catch human colds easily.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes, and turn away from the gorillas.
  • Wear a mask if your guide asks, because masks reduce the risk of passing on illness.
  • Never use flash. Speak softly and avoid sudden movements.
  • Carry out all litter.

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund shares similar advice for visitors. Our rules and etiquette guide explains why each rule exists.

Visas, health and safety for Rwanda gorilla trekking

Visas and passports

Rwanda offers a visa on arrival to all nationalities, according to Rwanda's immigration service. A holiday visa can last 30 days for a single entry or 90 days for multiple entries. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya for 90 days, and your first entry must be the country that issued it.

Health and entry notices

Health rules change quickly. In May 2026 the Rwandan Ministry of Health announced temporary entry rules for foreigners who had recently been in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as its notice explains. Rwanda reported no cases, and parks stayed open. This matters mostly if your route includes Congo, so check the current notices before you fly.

If you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, Rwanda may ask for a vaccination certificate. Check this with your travel clinic and your airline. Also check your own government's latest travel advice.

On the trail

Rangers escort every group, and habituated gorillas are calm around people. The main risks are slips, nettles and tiredness. Take travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation.

Combine Rwanda gorilla trekking with Nyungwe and Uganda

Many travellers pair Volcanoes National Park with Nyungwe Forest in the south-west. Nyungwe protects chimpanzees and 13 primate species in total, and its canopy walkway is a 160-metre bridge at a height of 70 metres, according to Visit Rwanda. Our chimpanzee trekking guide covers the apes of both countries.

You can also continue to Uganda. Roads link Kigali and southern Uganda, and some visitors trek in both countries. You can read about a quick option in our gorilla trek from Uganda starting in Kigali. Plan permit dates for each country first, then book flights.

Choosing between Rwanda and Uganda

The gorillas are the same species, and the rules are similar. The difference lies in the journey and the add-ons.

How your visit protects Rwanda's gorillas

Rwanda gorilla trekking funds the protection of the gorillas. The Rwanda Development Board says that 10 per cent of national park tourism revenue goes to communities near protected areas. Meanwhile, each September Rwanda holds Kwita Izina, a naming ceremony for baby gorillas. In 2026 the 21st ceremony named 22 babies, bringing the total to 460 since 2005, as the Rwanda Development Board reports.

The population has recovered since the 1980s, though it remains small. Visitors help by following the rules, hiring local guides and porters, and choosing a responsible operator. Our gorilla trekking guide explains more.

Family-friendly extras beyond the gorillas

Rwanda gorilla trekking suits many kinds of travellers. Permits are issued per person, so friends, couples and solo visitors can trek in the same group of up to eight.

Families with teenagers

Teenagers aged 15 and over can trek gorillas. Check each passport date before you book, because the age rule is strict. Younger children aged 12 and over can join golden monkey tracking or the Musanze Caves, so the whole family still shares a primate day.

Couples and honeymooners

Many couples pair a trek with a night in a lodge near the volcanoes. Misty mornings and quiet evenings suit that plan. Moreover, the short transfer from Kigali leaves time for a relaxed rest day afterwards.

Solo travellers

Solo visitors are welcome and trek with the same ranger groups as everyone else. Our team arranges your driver-guide and your lodge, so you never travel alone between stops. Ask us about extra costs for single travellers when you request a quote.

The story of Dian Fossey and Karisoke

Volcanoes National Park is closely tied to Dian Fossey, the American scientist who studied mountain gorillas here. She founded the Karisoke Research Centre in 1967. Her grave lies in the saddle between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, close to the old camp, and the hike to it is a popular add-on.

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund still works in the park today. Its trackers and scientists monitor gorilla families daily, and their records help rangers protect each group.

Kinigi, Musanze and the volcano setting

Kinigi is the small village that hosts the park offices where every trek begins. Musanze, the nearest town, offers shops, restaurants and many lodges. From here the volcanoes rise in a line along the horizon. On clear mornings you can see several peaks before you even start walking.

Because everything gathers around Kinigi, mornings feel organised and quick. Visitors drop at the offices, meet their guides and leave for the trailheads together.

Volcano hikes in detail

If you enjoy walking, add a volcano hike. All hikes need a permit and a guide, according to Visit Rwanda.

  • Mount Bisoke. A crater lake at about 3,700 metres. The hike takes from five hours to a full day.
  • Mount Karisimbi. Rwanda's highest peak at 4,507 metres. It usually takes two days with a night of camping.
  • Mount Muhabura. A demanding full-day climb to 4,127 metres.
  • The Dian Fossey trail. A shorter walk to the grave and the old research camp.

Our 1-day Bisoke hike shows how one of these fits into a trip.

Rwanda's other forests: Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura

Rwanda protects more than one forest. Nyungwe National Park covers 1,019 square kilometres and holds 13 primate species, about a quarter of Africa's primates, according to the Rwanda Development Board. Gishwati-Mukura is Rwanda's fourth national park and shelters chimpanzees and golden monkeys.

Both forests work well after a gorilla trek. Read our guide to Nyungwe chimpanzee tracking for the details. They offer a different kind of primate encounter and a very different landscape.

Visiting Kigali

Most travellers spend at least a night in Kigali. The city is clean, calm and easy to explore by car. The Kigali Genocide Memorial tells the story of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi with care and dignity, and many visitors say it helps them understand modern Rwanda. We recommend allowing half a day, and we can arrange a guide who explains the history with respect.
