Safari guide

Uganda national parks

Gorillas are the reason many travellers come to Uganda. The parks around them are the reason many stay longer. This guide helps you choose which parks to add and in what order.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda's largest national park, split by the Victoria Nile. Here the river squeezes through a gap about seven metres wide and drops into a boiling pool, then flows past hippos, crocodiles and elephants on its way to Lake Albert.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Uganda's most remote safari park, set among rugged mountains on the borders with South Sudan and Kenya. It rewards travellers who want open country, a strong sense of wilderness and very few other vehicles.

Lake Mburo National Park

A small, open park with lakes, acacia woodland and zebras, only a few hours from Kampala. It suits short safaris and makes a good stop between Kampala and Bwindi.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The Mountains of the Moon: a range of snow-capped peaks on the equator, with moorland, giant lobelias and glaciers. It is a trekking destination first and a wildlife destination second.

Which park suits you

  • Big game and the Nile: Murchison Falls for lions, elephants, giraffes and a boat trip to the base of the falls.
  • The widest variety: Queen Elizabeth for the Kazinga Channel, tree-climbing lions and chimpanzees in one park.
  • Chimpanzees and primates: Kibale, with the best known chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. See also chimpanzee trekking in Uganda.
  • Remote wilderness: Kidepo, far in the north-east, for open plains and few other visitors.
  • A short, easy safari: Lake Mburo, the closest savannah park to Kampala and a natural stop on the way to Bwindi.
  • Mountains and walking: Rwenzori, for multi-day treks through moorland and glacier country.

How the parks fit around a gorilla trek

Gorillas live in the south-west, in Bwindi and Mgahinga. The road from Kampala to Bwindi passes close to Lake Mburo, and Queen Elizabeth sits directly north of Bwindi, so these two are the easiest additions. Murchison Falls and Kidepo lie in the north and add more days, because each is a long drive or a flight from the south-west.

A common pattern is to travel in a loop: Entebbe, Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, then back by Lake Mburo. Our 10-day best of Uganda safari follows this shape. Tell us how many days you have and we shorten or stretch it.

Frequently asked questions

How many parks can I visit in one trip?

Most travellers add two or three parks to a gorilla trek. Count on at least two nights in each park so that you are not spending every day in the vehicle.

Which park is best for a first safari?

Queen Elizabeth is the usual choice because it offers game drives, a boat cruise and chimpanzees close to Bwindi. Murchison Falls is a strong second.

Are the parks open all year?

Yes. Wildlife viewing runs all year. The drier months make roads easier and wildlife easier to see, and the green months bring fewer visitors and better birding.

Can I add a park after booking my gorilla trek?

Usually yes. Send us your dates and we build the parks around your gorilla permit date.
