Golden monkey tracking Rwanda: how it works and who it suits

Golden monkey tracking Rwanda style takes you into bamboo forest to meet a lively troupe of one of Africa's rarest monkeys. This guide covers the age limit, group size, the start at Kinigi, fitness, photography and how to pair the monkeys with gorillas.

Golden monkey tracking Rwanda: the quick answer

Golden monkey tracking Rwanda style is a guided walk into the bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park to meet a troupe of rare golden monkeys. It suits visitors aged 12 and over, and it is gentler than a gorilla trek. According to the Rwanda Development Board, a group has a maximum of 16 people, and guides meet visitors at the Kinigi headquarters at 7:00 am.

Because the minimum age is lower than for gorillas, golden monkeys often suit families with younger teenagers. Many travellers also use the activity as a second day of wildlife after their gorilla trek.

  • Where. The bamboo slopes of the Virunga volcanoes in Rwanda.
  • Who. Visitors aged 12 and over.
  • Group size. Up to 16 people.
  • Start. The briefing at Kinigi, at 7:00 am.

What is a golden monkey?

The golden monkey is a forest guenon found only in the Albertine Rift region of central Africa. Its coat has a golden-orange back and flanks, with dark limbs and a pale face. The IUCN Red List lists the species as endangered.

In Rwanda, golden monkeys live on the volcano slopes inside the park. They love bamboo and spend much of the day eating young shoots, leaves and fruit. Because they depend on bamboo, protecting the forest protects them.

These monkeys are lively and curious. They leap, chase and chatter, which makes them a joy to watch and a fun contrast to calm gorillas.

How golden monkey tracking works

Trackers locate the troupe in the early morning and radio its position. Meanwhile, guides brief you and lead the group into the forest. The Rwanda Development Board says troupes can hold up to 30 individuals, so the scene is busy.

  1. Report. Arrive at the Kinigi headquarters by 7:00 am.
  2. Briefing. Rangers explain the rules and the route.
  3. Walk. You follow trackers through farmland and into the bamboo.
  4. Time with the monkeys. You watch, photograph and listen.
  5. Return. You walk back and head to your lodge.

Operators describe the time with the monkeys as about an hour, and we confirm the current rule when you book. Tracking runs once a day, and the park assigns the start time when you reserve.

Age limit and group rules

Golden monkey tracking has a minimum age of 12 years, according to the park authority. That is lower than the age of 15 for gorillas, so younger teenagers can join. Rangers may ask to see passports, so carry them on the day.

  • Minimum age. 12 years.
  • Maximum group. 16 visitors with one set of guides.
  • Health. Do not join if you have a cold or other infection.
  • Behaviour. Follow your ranger, keep your voice low and give the monkeys space.

Rangers set the exact viewing distance for golden monkey tracking Rwanda groups, and they can end the visit if the animals become stressed. Our rules and etiquette guide covers the habits that apply to every primate encounter.

Why bamboo forest matters

Bamboo is the heart of the golden monkey's world. The monkeys eat the young shoots, shelter in the stems and travel along the thick stalks. Without bamboo, the troupes would struggle to survive.

Bamboo is also under pressure from farming and fuel collection around the park. Careful tourism helps because it gives local people a reason to protect the forest. A share of park income funds community projects, which means a visit supports the neighbours of the forest as well as the animals.

Follow your guide and stay on the trail. Never cut or pick plants, and carry all litter out with you.

Golden monkey tracking Rwanda with teenagers and families

Families with teenagers find this activity especially useful. Gorilla trekking starts at 15, but golden monkey tracking starts at 12. As a result, a 13-year-old can join the monkeys even though the gorilla trek is out of reach.

The walk is shorter and gentler than a gorilla trek, and the monkeys keep young visitors entertained. Remember to carry passports so that rangers can check ages. Mixed ages work well, since adults can trek gorillas on one day and the whole family can meet the monkeys on another. Read our trek planning guide for more family tips.

A sample morning

This outline shows how a typical morning unfolds. Start times are set when you book, so ours is only an example.

TimeWhat happens
5:30 amBreakfast at your lodge
6:30 amDrive to Kinigi
7:00 amBriefing and group assignment
8:00 amWalk to the bamboo forest
9:00 amTime with the troupe
11:00 amReturn to the lodge for a rest

Many guests spend the afternoon on a cultural visit, a spa session or a short drive to the lakes. The rest of the day then feels relaxed, with plenty of time to share photographs.

Fitness and terrain

Golden monkey tracking Rwanda style is usually easier than a gorilla trek. The monkeys live on the lower and middle slopes, where bamboo grows thickly. Trails can be muddy and slippery, but the climb is often shorter.

Even so, the forest is wet and the ground uneven. Wear boots with grip, and walk at a steady pace. If you have a health concern, speak to your doctor before you travel. Our difficulty guide gives tips on preparation that suit both activities.

Porters can be hired for a small charge. They carry your daypack and steady you on slippery slopes.

Best time to go

Golden monkeys live in the park all year, so golden monkey tracking Rwanda treks run in every month. The drier months, June to September and December to February, bring firmer trails. The wetter months bring fewer visitors and lush bamboo, but they also bring mud.

Morning is the best time. The monkeys are active, the light is soft and the cloud is usually thin. Pack a rain jacket in any season, because showers arrive without warning. For more seasonal detail, see our best time guide.

Golden monkeys or gorillas?

These two activities offer different encounters. Gorillas are large, calm and slow. Golden monkeys are small, quick and playful. Most visitors enjoy both.

If you must choose one, choose gorillas. If you have an extra day, add the monkeys. Our Rwanda gorilla trekking guide shows how the activities fit together.

What you may see and hear

A troupe is rarely still. You may see adults leaping between stems, juveniles wrestling and mothers carrying babies on their backs. Golden monkeys also groom one another, which keeps the group close.

Listen as well as look. The monkeys make soft chirps, sharp alarm calls and rustling sounds as they pass through the bamboo. Rangers read these signals and tell you when the troupe plans to move. Stay patient, and the forest will reveal more than you expect. The troupe can include up to 30 animals, so there is always something happening.

Health and responsible tracking

Monkeys can catch human illnesses, so rangers ask sick visitors to stay behind. If you have a cough, a cold or a stomach problem, tell your guide before the walk. Hand sanitiser and a mask help protect the animals.

Responsible tracking also means respecting the forest. Stay on the trail, carry out all waste and keep a safe distance. Good habits on golden monkey tracking Rwanda mornings keep the troupes healthy for future visitors.

Photographing golden monkeys

For golden monkey tracking Rwanda photography, remember that the monkeys move fast and the bamboo forest is dim. A quick shutter speed and a higher ISO help. A lens reaching about 200 mm gives good framing. Phones work too if you turn off the flash.

Look for moments of rest, when the monkeys sit on bamboo stems and eat. Their golden coats glow in patches of sunlight. Never use flash, and never try to attract the animals with food.

Pairing the monkeys with other activities

Plan golden monkey tracking Rwanda days around your gorilla permit. Because gorilla dates are fixed, trek the gorillas first. Then use the next morning for the monkeys, a hike or a cave visit.

The Dian Fossey grave hike is a natural partner, since it explores the same mountains. If you arrive from the capital, read our guide to the journey from Kigali. For the park itself, see the park guide.

Golden monkeys in Uganda

Rwanda is not the only place to see this species. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda also offers golden monkey tracking in its bamboo zone. The experience is similar, and the setting is quieter.

If your trip includes Uganda, compare the two. Our Mgahinga guide describes the Ugandan option. Our 4-day Mgahinga safari combines gorillas and golden monkeys in one trip.
