The best time for gorilla trekking

Gorillas can be trekked in every month. The right month for you depends on how much mud you accept and how far ahead you plan.

Drier months: June to September, December to February

Trails are firmer, the forest is easier to walk and photographs are clearer. These are the busiest months, and permits for them are the first to go, so ask early.

Wetter months: March to May, October to November

Expect rain, mud and cloud in the valleys. The reward is a greener forest and fewer visitors. Good waterproofs and gaiters matter, and a porter helps on slippery slopes.

A simple rule

Plan as early as you can for the dry months. Travel in the wetter months if you value quiet more than comfort. Our packing guide covers both seasons.
