Gorilla permit cost is only part of a trip budget

The permit is the biggest single fee, yet it is not the whole trip. A complete budget also covers lodging, meals, transport, guides and extras.

• Lodging. Options run from simple lodges to luxury camps near the trailhead.
• Transport. You can drive, fly to an airstrip or combine both.
• Guide and driver. A private vehicle with a driver-guide is the usual choice.
• Porters. Many guests hire one, though it is optional.
• Extras. Add a chimpanzee trek or a golden monkey trek, and the total grows.

When you compare quotes, check that each one lists the same items. A cheaper quote that leaves out transport or the permit itself is not cheaper at all.

Uganda and Rwanda: why gorilla permit cost differs

The two countries run separate permit systems. Uganda has several trekking sectors and many gorilla groups, and it also offers a longer habituation experience. Rwanda has one park, Volcanoes National Park, with a single main gorilla product and a shorter journey from Kigali.

Seasons and gorilla permit cost

Demand follows the weather. June to September and December to February are the drier, busier months. March to May and October to November are wetter and quieter.

• Book early. Early requests give you the widest choice of dates and lodges.

None of these changes the trek itself. You still spend one hour with a gorilla family, accompanied by rangers.

• The park, sector and date of the permit.
• Whether the permit is included, and in whose name.
• What the transport, lodging and meals cover.
• The payment schedule and the change and cancellation terms.
• The licence details of the company you pay.

Gorilla permit cost for special permits

A habituation experience, a chimpanzee trek or a golden monkey trek each has its own permit. They are separate from a standard gorilla permit, so they add to the total. We can price them together in one quote.

Visitor categories and gorilla permit cost

Park tariffs often group visitors into categories. The common groups are foreign non-residents, foreign residents and citizens of East African countries. Each group can have its own rate, so your passport and residence matter.

Always tell us where you live as well as your nationality. A resident of Uganda or Rwanda, for example, may qualify for a different category than a visitor flying in. We confirm the right category with the park before we quote, so your figure is correct from the start. Rules differ between the two countries, and they can change, so we check them each time.

Common mistakes when comparing quotes

• Comparing only the headline number. Two quotes can cover very different things.
• Ignoring what is left out. Look for flights, visas, tips and insurance.
• Assuming every permit is the same. A standard trek and a habituation experience differ.
• Paying before the permit is confirmed. Ask for written confirmation first.
• Forgetting change terms. A low quote with strict terms can cost more later.

How gorilla permit cost differs for children and groups

Gorilla trekking has a minimum age of 15, so most young children cannot hold a permit. Teenagers who qualify need their own permit, and parks do not give a family bundle. Plan the budget per traveller, and count every permit separately.

Groups work the same way. Each person needs a permit, and each gorilla family takes up to eight visitors a day. A group of eight can trek together, while larger groups split across families. Splitting does not change the fee per person, but it does change the logistics. We plan the days around that.
