Getting there
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park: how to get there, step by step
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is about 90 to 95 kilometres by road, and the drive takes roughly one and a half to two and a half hours. This guide explains the route, your transfer options, whether a day trip works and how to time your trek morning at Kinigi.
Kigali to Volcanoes National Park: the quick answer
The distance from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is about 90 to 95 kilometres by road. The drive takes roughly one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on traffic and where you start. The road is paved and scenic, so most visitors find the transfer easy.
Trekkers must report to the park offices at Kinigi by 7:00 am for the briefing, according to the Rwanda Development Board. Because of that early start, most guests drive up the afternoon before and sleep in Musanze. A same-day journey is possible, yet it means a very early departure.
Here is the short version:
- Distance. About 90 to 95 kilometres from central Kigali.
- Drive time. Plan for one and a half to two and a half hours.
- Best plan. Travel the day before, and sleep near the park.
- Report time. Be at the Kinigi offices before 7:00 am.
How far is the drive from Kigali to Musanze?
Musanze is the town closest to the park, and it is where most lodges and restaurants sit. For Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, the distance is about 90 to 95 kilometres. Operators quote different times, so it helps to plan with a range. The Rwanda Development Board describes the Musanze caves as about 90 minutes from Kigali by road, while some operators allow up to two and a half hours.
Several things change the time. Morning traffic in the capital can add half an hour. Slow trucks on the climbing sections add more. Rain, road works and photo stops also stretch the journey.
| Starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Central Kigali hotel | About 1.5 to 2.5 hours |
| Kigali International Airport | The same range, plus time to leave the terminal |
| Musanze town to the Kinigi offices | A short local drive |
For planning, we use two and a half hours as a safe figure. Then a traffic jam never spoils the day.
The road from Kigali: what you will pass
The route from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park heads north-west out of the city and climbs through the hills. Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills, and this road shows why. Terraced slopes, banana groves and small villages line the way, and the views open wider as you climb.
The road is paved, and drivers share it with motorbikes, cyclists and people on foot. A careful driver matters here. Closer to Musanze, the volcanoes appear on the horizon. On clear days you can pick out several peaks before you arrive.
If you wish, your driver can stop for a coffee or a photo. Allow a little extra time when you do.

A day trip from Kigali: is it realistic?
Some visitors ask for a gorilla day trip on the Kigali to Volcanoes National Park route. It can be done, though it is demanding. You would leave Kigali around 4:00 or 4:30 am to reach Kinigi before the briefing. Then you trek for anything from one hour to most of the day, and drive back in the afternoon or evening.
The long day leaves little time to rest. Because the trek itself can be tiring, many people feel the drive more than they expect. If your schedule is tight, ask us about a day trip. We usually suggest an overnight stay instead.
Whichever you choose, avoid booking a flight out of Rwanda on the evening of your trek. Gorillas keep their own schedule, so a late finish could cost you your seat.
Why we suggest an overnight stay before your trek
An overnight stay near the park changes the whole experience. You wake up rested, and you reach the briefing without a rush. A short morning drive replaces a long, dark one.
- More rest. You start the trek fresh, which helps on steep and muddy ground.
- A calmer breakfast. Lodges can serve an early meal, and some pack a lunch.
- A buffer for delays. A slow road or heavy rain no longer threatens your trek.
- Better views. Many lodges look straight at the volcanoes.
Lodges around Musanze range from simple guesthouses to refined retreats. We match one to your style and your permit date. Our 2-day Rwanda gorilla trekking trip follows exactly this pattern.
Timing your trek morning
Kinigi is the small village that hosts the park offices. The Rwanda Development Board asks trekkers to report at 7:00 am, and the briefing starts then. Rangers explain the rules and match each group to a gorilla family.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5:30 am | Wake up and eat breakfast |
| 6:15 am | Leave the lodge in Musanze |
| 6:45 am | Reach the Kinigi offices and register |
| 7:00 am | Briefing starts |
| After the briefing | Assignment to a family and the drive to the trailhead |
These times are a guide, and they can shift by season. We confirm your exact schedule a day before your trek. Because the offices get busy, arriving a little early is wise. Read the rules and etiquette guide beforehand, since rangers repeat them at the briefing.
After the trek: heading back to Kigali
Treks end at different times. A short walk may finish by late morning, while a long one can run into the afternoon. Back at the lodge, most guests shower, eat and rest.
Then the return leg of Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes the same one and a half to two and a half hours. If you leave after lunch, you reach Kigali by evening. We suggest keeping the next morning free. That gives you time to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which many travellers find deeply moving, or to relax before an evening flight.
If you plan to continue to Uganda, allow a full day for the border crossing. Our Uganda or Rwanda comparison explains how the two countries fit together.
Arriving in Kigali: your first night
Kigali International Airport is the main gateway. Staff there are used to tourists, and most arrivals pass through quickly. Your driver meets you outside the arrivals hall and takes you to your hotel.
Many guests spend their first night in the capital. A walk, a good dinner and an early bed set you up well. Then you drive north the next day. If your flight lands late, we can arrange a hotel near the airport, so you do not need to travel at night.
Visas and documents for the journey
Before you plan Kigali to Volcanoes National Park travel, check the entry rules. They differ by nationality, so review them before you pay for flights. According to Rwanda Immigration, visitors can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport and at land borders. A holiday visa gives 30 days for a single entry, or 90 days for multiple entries. Your passport must stay valid for at least six months.
The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda for 90 days. If you buy it before travel, your first entry must be into the country where you applied. Because rules change, always read the official page again a few days before you fly. Our trek planning guide has a full countdown.

What to carry in the car
Keep a small bag within reach on the Kigali to Volcanoes National Park drive. The road is winding, and the weather can change quickly in the hills.
- Your passport and a copy of your permit details.
- A light rain jacket and a warm layer.
- Water, snacks and tablets for motion sickness if you need them.
- Your camera, a power bank and some small notes for tips.
Pack your boots and gloves where you can reach them on trek morning. For the full checklist, see our packing guide.
Safety and comfort on the road
Rwandan roads are among the better ones in the region, yet care still matters. Drivers should avoid night travel in the hills, since cyclists and pedestrians are hard to see. A seat belt is a must for every passenger.
Fog can settle on the higher stretches, especially in the early morning. In that case, a good driver slows down and keeps a safe gap. If you feel unwell on winding roads, sit in the front and look at the horizon. Our team briefs every driver before your trip, so you can relax and enjoy the view.
Beyond the gorillas: caves, lakes and culture near the park
Musanze rewards a spare day. The Musanze Caves are a guided walk of about two and a half hours through a long volcanic cave, and the Rwanda Development Board sets the minimum age at 12. The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo lie close by, and a viewpoint over them can be reached by car.
If you want more wildlife, add golden monkey tracking the next morning. If you like hiking, consider the Dian Fossey grave hike or our 1-day Bisoke hike. The park guide describes every option.
