Trek timing

How long is gorilla trekking, and how long does a trek day really take?

How long is gorilla trekking? Most treks take from about three hours to a full day. The walk to the gorillas varies, you spend one hour with the family, and then you walk back. This guide breaks down each stage and shows how to plan around it.

How long is gorilla trekking? The short answer

How long is gorilla trekking in practice? A gorilla trek usually takes between three hours and a full day, from the park briefing to your return. The walk to the gorillas can last anywhere from about half an hour to several hours. You then spend one hour with the family, and you walk back.

That is the honest answer to how long is gorilla trekking: it varies. Because wild gorillas move, no one can promise an exact duration. Trackers set out before you and radio the group's position. That position decides how far you walk.

This guide explains each stage, what changes the timing and how to plan the rest of your day. For fitness advice, see our separate difficulty guide. Rules about the hour come from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The whole trek day, hour by hour

This sample timeline shows a typical Uganda trek. Real times shift with the sector and the family you are assigned.

TimeWhat happens
6:00 to 7:00 amBreakfast at your lodge, packed lunch ready
7:30 amArrive at the park office and register
8:00 amRanger briefing on rules and group assignment
8:30 amSet off with a guide, trackers and, if you wish, a porter
9:30 am to 1:00 pmWalk to the gorillas, varying a lot
About an hourTime with the gorillas, once you reach them
Early to mid afternoonWalk back to the trailhead and collect a certificate
Late afternoonReturn to the lodge for a hot shower and a late lunch

On an easy day you may be back by lunchtime. On a hard day you may return close to dusk. Therefore keep your afternoon free.

How long is the walk to the gorillas?

When people ask how long is gorilla trekking, the walk is the part that changes most. Some groups sleep near the trailhead, and visitors reach them in under an hour. Other groups travel far overnight, so the same walk can take several hours each way.

Many treks fall in the middle, with a walk of two to four hours in. Rangers decide on the day, using the trackers' reports. They also match groups to families by fitness, which helps keep the pace comfortable.

A trek that starts fast can still slow down. Steep slopes, mud and dense vegetation all add time, and your group moves at the pace of its slowest member.

Why gorilla trekking time changes from day to day

Several things shape the length of your day. Knowing them helps you plan, and it also helps you stay calm if the walk runs long.

  • Where the family slept. Gorillas build a new nest each night, and the distance changes daily.
  • The sector. Some sectors have steeper, longer approaches than others.
  • The weather. Rain makes trails slick, so you walk more slowly.
  • Group fitness. A steady pace is faster than frequent stops.
  • Gorilla movement. A family on the move may lead trackers further away.

Rangers manage the timing with care, and you will not be rushed. If you need a rest, ask your guide.

The hour with the gorillas

Once you reach the family, you may stay with them for one hour. The rule exists to protect the gorillas. Shorter visits mean less stress for the animals, and they also lower the risk of passing on human illness.

Your guide keeps time, and the hour is the same for every group. It begins when you meet the family, not when you leave the trailhead. Many visitors say the hour feels short, so put your camera away for part of it and watch.

Extra time is not part of the standard trek. If you want longer, look at the habituation experience, described below.

How long is the briefing and the wait?

Arrive at the park office early. The briefing usually lasts about half an hour, though it can be a little longer on busy days. Rangers explain the rules, introduce your guide and assign your group.

Waiting can add time. Several groups may leave from the same office, so there can be a short pause before you set off. Use it to use the toilet, fill your water bottle and check your boots. Our rules and etiquette guide explains what the briefing covers.

The walk back and the end of the day

The walk back is often quicker, because the trail is known and gravity helps on the way down. Even so, tired legs slow people, and some slopes are slippery. Allow at least as long as the walk in, and sometimes a little less.

Back at the trailhead, rangers usually present certificates and thank visitors. A porter, if you hired one, receives their fee at this stage. Most guests then return to the lodge, shower and eat a late lunch. Nothing else should be planned for the same afternoon.

How long is gorilla trekking in each sector?

Each Bwindi sector has its own character, and treks vary with it. The table gives a general feel. It is not a promise, because gorillas decide the real time.

SectorTypical walkNote
BuhomaOften moderateA good first choice
RuhijaModerate to longHigher and cooler
RushagaShort to longWide variation between groups
NkuringoOften long and steepBest for fit walkers

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park also varies, from a short walk to several hours. Read our Rwanda gorilla trekking guide to compare.

How long is gorilla trekking for slower walkers?

Slower walkers should plan for the long version of the day. Older visitors and people who rest often can still succeed, and rangers match groups by fitness. Say so at the briefing, and they will place you in a group that moves at a gentle pace.

A porter helps, and so does a walking stick. Rest often, drink water and eat a snack at each stop. If a family is far away, rangers may offer a different group, which keeps the day comfortable. Our guide for senior travellers explains the choices in detail.

What if the gorillas are far away?

Sometimes the trackers report a family a long way off. The walk then takes hours, and the day gets long. Rangers weigh this, and they often keep the group together at a steady pace.

Because the hour with the gorillas stays the same, a long walk does not shorten your time with them. You simply earn the encounter. Bring extra water, wear boots you trust and keep a positive attitude. Many visitors say the longest walks were the ones they remember best.

How long is gorilla trekking in Mgahinga?

Mgahinga is a small park, but treks there can still vary. The gorilla family moves between the Ugandan side and neighbouring parks from time to time, so the walk differs between seasons. Rangers decide on the day.

The park sits on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, so trails can be steep. Read our Mgahinga guide for more, and ask us about the current situation for your dates.

How long a chimpanzee trek lasts by comparison

Chimpanzee treks are usually shorter. Most last between two and five hours, including one hour with the chimpanzees. They move quickly, so the walk can change too, but the terrain is often gentler.

If you have limited time, a chimpanzee trek may fit more easily into a day. Many visitors do both in one trip. See our chimpanzee trekking guide for detail.

Time-saving tips for trek day

You cannot shorten the walk, but you can avoid wasting time around it.

  • Sleep near your trailhead, so the morning drive is short.
  • Prepare your daypack the night before.
  • Eat breakfast early, and take a packed lunch.
  • Arrive at the park office before the briefing starts.
  • Use the toilet before you set off.

These habits help every group leave on time. Choosing the right lodge is part of the plan, as our guide to Bwindi lodges explains.

How long is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is compact, and treks there also vary. Some groups reach their family in a short walk, while others need several hours. The park offices at Kinigi organise the briefing and the assignment in the morning, and the Rwanda Development Board manages the park.

Because the park lies close to Musanze and Kigali, many visitors fit the trek into a short stay. Even so, keep the day free, and avoid a same-day flight. Our Kigali to Volcanoes guide covers the road, and the Rwanda gorilla trekking guide explains the park.

How long is the habituation experience?

The habituation experience is longer. Instead of one hour, visitors may spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still learning to accept people. Only a small group joins each day, and the experience is based in Rushaga.

The day is much longer in total, because the walk is also part of it. If you love photography or want more time, ask us about this option. The habituation or trekking guide compares the two.

How long should you allow in your trip plan?

Think in days, not only hours, when you ask how long is gorilla trekking for your trip. A smooth plan gives you time to arrive, trek and recover. Many travellers ask how long is gorilla trekking in terms of days, and the answer is usually three.

  • The day before. Arrive at your lodge and rest.
  • Trek day. Keep the whole day free, and expect to be tired.
  • The day after. Travel on, or rest and explore.

Never schedule a flight on trek day, whatever the answer to how long is gorilla trekking turns out to be. Roads are long, and delays are common. If you fly out soon afterwards, leave at least one buffer day. Our trek planning guide gives a full countdown, and how to get to Bwindi covers travel times.

How to prepare for a long trek day

Prepare for the longest version of the day, and enjoy a shorter one as a bonus. That is the safest way to answer how long is gorilla trekking for your own body. Carry enough water and snacks for several hours. Wear waterproof boots with good grip, and pack a rain jacket in every season.

A porter can make a long day easier. They carry your daypack and give a steady hand on steep ground, and hiring one supports a local family. Walk steadily, rest when you need to and tell your guide if you feel unwell. Our packing guide has a full checklist.
