Uganda Rwanda border crossing: Katuna and Cyanika explained
A Uganda Rwanda border crossing is easy when you prepare. This guide compares Katuna and Cyanika, lists the documents and visas you need, explains vehicle transfers and shows how to time the day around a gorilla permit.
The Uganda Rwanda border crossing in short
A Uganda Rwanda border crossing is simple on paper and slow only when documents are missing. Two land routes suit gorilla travellers. Katuna, called Gatuna on the Rwanda side, links Kabale with Kigali. Cyanika links Kisoro with Musanze, close to Volcanoes National Park.
Most visitors make the Uganda Rwanda border crossing with a licensed driver and a prepared set of papers. The crossing itself often takes between thirty minutes and a couple of hours, depending on the queue. Rules change, so confirm current requirements on the official sites, such as the Uganda immigration site and the Rwanda migration site.
This guide compares the two crossings and lists the documents you need. It also shows how to time the day around a gorilla permit in either country.
Which Uganda Rwanda border crossing should you use?
The right crossing depends on where you are going next. If your trek is in the southwest of Uganda and you will end in Kigali, both routes work. The choice mainly follows the shape of your trip.
| Crossing | Link | Best for | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Katuna / Gatuna | Kabale to Kigali road | Kigali, Akagera, Lake Bunyonyi side | Main road with steady traffic |
| Cyanika | Kisoro to Musanze road | Volcanoes National Park, Musanze | Quieter, scenic, near the volcanoes |
Either Uganda Rwanda border crossing can work, but each fits a different route. Use Katuna if you are travelling between Kigali and the Kabale or Bwindi side by road. Use Cyanika if your next stop is the Virunga volcano region, or if you finish in Rushaga or Nkuringo. Our Kigali to Uganda trek guide and Kigali to Volcanoes guide give the full routes.
Katuna border crossing: what to expect
Katuna sits on the main road between Kabale in Uganda and Kigali in Rwanda. The border lies roughly an hour from Kabale and about two hours from Kigali in normal traffic, though times vary with weather and road works. It is the busiest crossing on this route.
On arrival, you leave the vehicle, complete exit formalities on one side and entry formalities on the other. The sequence is usually the same each time. Queues are shortest in the morning and can grow when trucks bunch up.
Many travellers use Katuna when they combine a Bwindi trek in Uganda with a Kigali start or end. The road from Kabale to Bwindi is long and winding, so allow a full day. Read how to plan that stretch in our Bwindi route guide.
Cyanika border crossing: what to expect
Cyanika is the smaller and calmer crossing, with mountain scenery on both sides. It lies between the Kisoro area in Uganda and the Musanze area in Rwanda. From the Rwanda side, Volcanoes National Park is close, and the road is in good condition.
The crossing is popular with travellers who trek in Uganda's southern sectors and then go straight to Rwanda's gorillas. A common pattern is a Rushaga or Nkuringo trek, followed by a transfer to Musanze for a second trek. Our combination trip guide shows how to space the two permits.
Opening hours and facilities can change, so ask your operator to confirm them for your date. Pack snacks and water, since services near the border are limited.

Documents for a Uganda Rwanda border crossing
Carry the same core papers at either crossing. Keep them together in a flat pouch that you can reach without unpacking the bag.
- A passport with enough validity and blank pages for stamps. Confirm the rule for your nationality.
- A visa or e-visa, if your nationality needs one. The East Africa Tourist Visa is covered in our visa guide.
- A yellow fever certificate if it is required for your route. Read the vaccine guide for details.
- Your gorilla permit confirmations for both countries.
- A copy of your itinerary and lodge bookings.
Rules differ by nationality and they change. Therefore check the official sites before you travel, and ask us if you are unsure. The World Health Organization travel advice page is a useful reference for health requirements.
Visas and the Uganda Rwanda border crossing
Visa rules are the most common source of stress at a land border. Many visitors need a visa for each country, and some use a single multi-country visa. The details depend on your passport and on the current policy.
Apply online before you travel wherever possible. Print the approval and keep a digital copy on your phone. Border staff may still ask for fingerprints, a photo and proof of onward travel.
If you plan to cross more than once, check how a visa works for re-entry. Our East Africa Tourist Visa guide explains the scheme and who it suits. Confirm every point on the official sites before you rely on it, because policies are updated.
Vehicles and transfers
Vehicle rules matter as much as personal papers. Some operators drive across the border with the same vehicle, which needs the right permissions and insurance. Others use a "walk-through" transfer, where you cross on foot and meet a second vehicle and driver on the other side.
Both methods work well when they are planned in advance. The second method can be quicker, because it avoids vehicle checks. In contrast, a single vehicle means you keep the same driver and your luggage stays put.
Ask your operator which method they use and who is responsible for the paperwork. Bags may be scanned on entry to Rwanda, and single-use plastic bags are restricted there, so pack in cloth or reusable bags. A good plan names the driver, the pick-up point and a back-up number.
Money, phones and small things
Carry a little cash in small notes for porters, snacks and any local fees. Cards and mobile money may not work at the border. Exchange offers there are rarely good, so change money in town.
Phone signal changes as you cross, and roaming can be costly. Switch off data roaming before the border, and use a local SIM if you need one. Keep your phone charged, because you may need to show an approval or a booking.
Wear comfortable clothes and carry a light jacket, since hills can be cool. Keep valuables in your day bag, not in the boot. A calm, tidy approach makes the officials' work easier, and it makes your own day smoother as well.
Health and safety on the road
Land borders are busy places. Stay with your driver, keep your bag close and use only official counters. Ignore anyone who offers to "speed up" the process for a fee.
Drink water and wash your hands, since queues can be long and hot. Carry any medicine in its original packaging, with a short note from your doctor if needed. Check your government's current travel advice before you leave home.
If something looks wrong, call your operator at once. A responsive team on the ground is one reason to choose your operator with care.
Timing your border crossing around a gorilla permit
Never plan a Uganda Rwanda border crossing on the morning of a trek. A border delay could cost you the permit, and permits are tied to a fixed date. Instead, cross a day before, or after, and sleep near the trailhead.
Build in a buffer. A border day should include a long lunch break and a late arrival time. If your permit is for the next morning, plan to reach your lodge well before dark, because mountain roads are slow at night.
Remember that the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Rwanda Development Board set permit rules. Check them on the Uganda Wildlife Authority site and the Rwanda Development Board site. Our permit booking guide explains how to match dates in two countries.

A sample travel day
This sample day shows how a calm crossing can look. Real times shift with traffic and weather.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Leave the lodge after breakfast with all papers in one pouch |
| Midday | Arrive at the border, exit one country and enter the other |
| Early afternoon | Meet the driver on the far side and continue |
| Late afternoon | Reach the lodge, rest and prepare for the trek |
This pace leaves room for queues. If everything runs smoothly, you gain a relaxed evening. If it does not, you still arrive in time for the briefing the next morning.
Common mistakes to avoid
Several simple errors cause most delays. Out-of-date or short-validity passports top the list. Next comes a missing visa, followed by a missing yellow fever card.
Travellers also try to cross on the same day as a trek, which risks the permit. Others forget to tell their operator about a change of nationality or passport details. Finally, some pack liquids or plastic bags that are restricted in Rwanda.
A short checklist prevents these problems. Check your papers one week before you travel, again the night before and once more at breakfast. Our packing guide includes a travel-document reminder.
Plan the crossing early, share the details with us and ask us to check your dates. Then use our booking page to start your plan, and read the gorilla trek planning guide for the wider picture.
