Gorilla trekking from Kigali: how to plan it
Gorilla trekking from Kigali is simple, because Volcanoes National Park lies only a morning's drive from the capital. This guide covers distance, timing, two- and three-day plans, visas and the road from Kigali to Uganda's gorilla parks.
Gorilla trekking from Kigali: the short answer
Gorilla trekking from Kigali is easy to arrange, because Volcanoes National Park lies only a morning's drive from the capital. Most travellers arrive in Kigali, drive to Musanze, trek the next morning and return. Kigali is also a practical gateway to Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda through the Cyanika border.
The Rwanda Development Board issues permits for the Volcanoes park. This guide covers the road, the timing, sample plans and the extras that fit around a trek. For the park itself, read our Volcanoes National Park guide.
Distance and drive time to Musanze
Volcanoes National Park lies near Musanze, in the north-west of Rwanda. Expect a drive of roughly 90 to 95 kilometres, which takes about one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on traffic and your starting point. Overall, the road is paved and well maintained, and it climbs gently into the volcano country.
Kinigi, a small village near Musanze, hosts the park offices where treks begin. From the capital, most visitors reach it in a morning drive. Because the distance is short, Rwanda is the quickest gorilla destination for travellers with few days.
Can you trek gorillas in a day from Kigali?
A one-day trek is possible on paper, yet it is tight. Treks start early, and the walk can last from about an hour to most of a day. A same-day return to the capital then adds a long drive after a tiring trek.
For this reason, we usually suggest a night near Musanze. A night before your trek lets you start fresh and avoid a rush. A night after your trek lets you rest and enjoy the views. If time is very limited, ask us about an early start and a late return, and we will advise you honestly.
A two-day plan for gorilla trekking from Kigali
A short, efficient plan looks like this.
| Day | Plan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Land in Kigali, drive to Musanze, rest and prepare | A relaxed evening before the trek |
| Day 2 | Early briefing at Kinigi, trek and spend one hour with the gorillas, return to Kigali | Back in the capital by evening |
This pattern suits travellers on a tight schedule. See our 2-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour for a ready-made version. If you are arriving from Uganda, our 2-day Uganda gorilla trek from Kigali shows a similar idea across the border.

A three-day plan with time to spare
An extra day makes the experience calmer and richer.
- Day 1. Arrive in Kigali, visit the city or the memorial, then drive to Musanze.
- Day 2. Trek the gorillas in the morning, and rest in the afternoon.
- Day 3. Add a golden monkey trek, a cave visit or a village walk, then return to Kigali.
Our 3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour follows this shape. Longer trips, such as the 5-day gorilla trekking in Rwanda tour, add culture and hikes.
What to do in Kigali before or after your trek
Kigali is clean, calm and easy to explore. Many visitors spend half a day in the city before heading north.
- Kigali Genocide Memorial. It tells the story of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi with care, and many visitors say it helps them understand modern Rwanda.
- Markets and craft shops. Find baskets, paintings and coffee.
- Cafes and restaurants. Kigali has a lively food scene.
- Hill viewpoints. Enjoy sunsets over the city's green hills.
Visit Rwanda's official site, visitrwanda.com, lists more ideas. Allow a buffer day if you want to see the city properly.
Extras within reach of Kigali and Musanze
The Musanze area offers more than gorillas, and several options fit easily after a trek.
- Golden monkey tracking. The RDB lists troupes of up to 30 animals, a group size of up to 16 people and a minimum age of 12. Visitors meet at Kinigi in the early morning.
- Musanze Caves. The RDB describes a guided visit of about two and a half hours, with a minimum age of 12. It lies roughly 90 minutes from Kigali by road.
- Volcano hikes. Mount Bisoke offers a crater lake, and Mount Karisimbi is Rwanda's highest peak. See our 1-day Bisoke hike.
- Dian Fossey's grave. A guided walk reaches her tomb and the old research camp.
Each extra needs its own booking, so tell us early if you want to add one.
Gorilla trekking from Kigali to Bwindi and Mgahinga
Kigali also serves as a gateway to Uganda's gorilla parks. The road from the capital runs through Musanze to the Cyanika border, then on to Kisoro, Mgahinga and the southern sectors of Bwindi. Allow roughly four to five hours of driving to Rushaga, plus border formalities.
This route suits travellers who prefer Uganda's wider choice of sectors but want a shorter flight into Kigali. Our guide to getting to Bwindi explains the route and the sectors, and our two-country guide shows how to do both countries.
Permits for gorilla trekking from Kigali
Permits are limited and issued for a named traveller and a date. Rwanda's park authority takes bookings through its online portal and through licensed operators. Uganda's authority issues permits through licensed operators for visitors from outside East Africa. We reserve permits in both countries.
Plan your dates first, then fix your permit, and only then book flights and lodges. Our permit booking guide explains the steps, and our permit change guide covers what to do if plans shift.
Visa and arrival in Kigali
Rwanda's immigration service says that travellers of all nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport. A holiday visa is valid for 30 days for a single entry, or 90 days for multiple entries, and an online application through the national portal is optional. Some groups receive fee waivers. The East Africa Tourist Visa also covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda for 90 days if you stay within the three.
Read the full conditions on the Rwanda immigration visa page, and confirm current requirements before you travel. Carry a passport with at least six months of validity.

Trek day, from the hotel to the hour
Understanding the day helps you plan the transfer. Times shift with the season, so treat this as a guide.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Breakfast and drive to the park offices in Kinigi |
| Briefing | Rangers explain the rules and assign each group to a family |
| Trailhead | Drive or walk to the start point, with an optional porter |
| The walk | From about an hour to most of a day, following the trackers |
| The hour | One hour with the gorillas, at the distance the rules set |
| Return | Certificate, lunch and the drive back to Musanze or Kigali |
Because the start is early, staying near Musanze makes gorilla trekking from Kigali far smoother than a dawn drive from the capital.
Best months for gorilla trekking from Kigali
Trekking runs all year. The drier months, June to September and December to February, bring firmer trails and busier parks. The wetter months bring quieter forests and fewer permit pressures, though mud is deeper. Read our best time guide for details, and pack a rain jacket in every month.
Arriving at Kigali airport
Kigali International Airport is modern and easy to use. After immigration, collect your bags and meet your driver in the arrivals hall. Keep your permit confirmation and passport at hand. Many flights land in the evening, so a night in the city or a short drive to Musanze both work.
If your flight lands late, sleep in Kigali and drive north in the morning of the day before your trek. Never plan to land and trek on the same morning. A delayed flight earns no refund, as the park states on its portal.
Lodges around Musanze
Lodges near Musanze range from simple guesthouses to refined retreats with volcano views. Pick one close to the park offices, since a shorter morning drive means a calmer start. Ask us about showers, laundry and early breakfasts, because muddy boots and hungry trekkers need all three.
We choose lodges to fit your permit date, your group size and your style. Our luxury gorilla safaris show the top end of the range.
Fitness, packing and rules for your trek
A trek from the capital is no easier than any other, so prepare well. Wear waterproof boots, long trousers and a rain jacket, and carry water and snacks. The rules in Rwanda keep visitors seven metres from the gorillas, with no more than eight people per family. Do not trek if you are ill, because gorillas catch human illness.
Read our difficulty guide and our packing guide before you go. Our rules guide explains why each rule exists.
